£14,500 raised by four legends

Gafael Llaw

Four friends circumnavigated the coast of the UK clockwise in an 8.75m rib boat to raise money for us.

Boating enthusiasts Mark Hickman, Ross Hickman, Mark Overend and John Leek from Anglesey completed the 2,000 nautical mile challenge in just eight days.

Crew member Mark Hickman, from Trearddur Bay, said: “Our initial target was to raise £5,000 but we managed to raise £14,500 which is magnificent.

“We managed it in just eight days having set ourselves a target of nine days. The toughest part was the journey from the Orkney Islands to Edinburgh in thick fog and gales. We were running out of fuel and our throttle broke. A big thank you must go to Coastal Rides from Dover who delivered the new throttle.”

They made it in the end and the four, who funded the “Myles Aweigh” challenge from their own pockets, sailed into Holyhead.

The money raised will go towards our next major project which is funding a multi-sensory room at Ysbyty Gwynedd’s Dewi Ward to provide children and their families with an opportunity to play and relieve their stress in a safe, engaging environment.

Mr Hickman said: “Were proud to be able to do our bit to support the work of this great local charity. Gafael Llaw has already raised a lot of money to support children in the area who suffer from cancer so I’m delighted we can contribute.”

He also thanked Shropshire based Ventilair UK for sponsoring the cost of all the fuel. Our Chairman Iwan Trefor Jones said: “We are absolutely delighted by the donation and the men’s efforts and we can’t thank them enough.

“Cancer unfortunately touches far too many lives here in Gwynedd so we’re determined to raise more money to support children and young people from the area who are suffering.”
