Gafael Llaw have recently funded a brand new 4D Distraction Room at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital.

£45K has been donated by Gafael Llaw to Alder Hey Children’s Charity with the money allocated to fund a 4D Distraction Treatment Room on the Oncology Ward.

Fiona Ashcroft Alder Hey Children’s Charity CEO said:

“We’d like to thank everyone at Gafael Llaw for their incredible support of our young oncology patients, including those from the North Wales region. We treat over 7000 oncology inpatient and outpatients every year, so our treatment rooms need to ensure as positive an experience as possible.

“Thanks to this gift our children and young people now have a new 4D distraction room, a place that helps keep attention away from their treatment using a range of techniques including LED image projections, colour and sounds and which can be tailored to their individual requirements. A huge thank you from everyone at Alder Hey for your amazing and ongoing support.”

Gafael Llaw was established in 2013 by a group of friends from Caernarfon to support children and young people from Gwynedd and Anglesey suffering from cancer. The charity provides support for Dewi Ward, Ysbyty Gwynedd, Alder Hey Children’s Hospital and Young Lives vs Cancer (formerly known as CLIC Sargent).

Iwan Trefor Jones, Gafael Llaw Chairman added: “It’s great to see this 4D distraction room completed and to hear feedback from the families and staff about the impact it’s already having on the brave young patients. We’re proud of our ongoing relationship with Alder Hey, a hospital where so many youngsters from north Wales receive their treatment.

“Following the pandemic our charity has gone from strength to strength thanks to the amazing people who raise funds on our behalf – I’d like to pay tribute to each one of those people and to thank them for their efforts. Their generosity and support are making an impact by improving facilities and services for Gwynedd and Anglesey children.”

Founded in 2013, Gafael Llaw is celebrating its 10th Birthday this year. Over the last ten years the charity and its supporters have raised over £400,000 to help local families. This money has funded a playground at Dewi Ward, oncology rooms at the new Alder Hey hospital, days out for children and their families and many other projects.
